washes great, belches steam, frys logic boards (yes, boards plural)

This is the worst consumer product I have ever bought. Worse than any bad dell laptop or any other appliance. The sad thing is, that it does a great job washing dishes and is pretty quiet while doing it. Frigidaire seems to think that their solution to a ventless design is to let steam escape during drying from out the sides and top of the door. Within 6 months, my cabinets and doors were ruined by the constant steam. The finish peeled and cracked. was covered under warranty by maker of cabinets but clearly wasn’t their fault. Then a few months later, the thing started blinking and would only sporadically respond to button presses and would only do random things not necessarily what I pressed. Service came out and replaced buttons and circuit board (under warranty). That circuit board started to cause my dishwasher to randomly make crazy noises at random times of day regardless of whether or not the dishwasher was actually run that day. Came out again and said they could not duplicate the problem, I asked them to stay until it did it again, and of course it started doing it again at 2am so they had left. Well, now I can get a new circuit board because it died again. lights blinking, then nothing. oh wait, nothing but then 5 minutes later burning smell and smoke. unplugged unit, thankfully I was home and prevented a bigger fire or explosion. Now it is past warranty and repair is $200 for the same crappy circuit board. if you ever get a chance to look at the circuit board, it resembles the technology of your old atari 2600 but actually costs more, does less and is extremely prone to failure. Over the years, frigidaire has made small changes to the design from an aesthetic point, but not from a functional point, the newer 2010 model still has the same lousy design. do a search on frigidaire circuit board failiure or frigidaire fire or frigidaire cabinet steam and see the many complaints. some have even gone so far as to make their own site dedicated to the problems with dishwasher. i am hoping to get a few more months out of this piece of garbage and find something else on sale. a complete waste of hundreds of dollars. so 1 year, 2 replaced circuit boards, should have been 3, replaced cabinet doors and have had a total of 3 weeks of no dishwasher.

Looks nice and sleek but is a pile of junk

This dishwasher was actually one of the gifts given to the audience on one of the Ellen Degeneres shows. Our friend didn’t need it, so she sold it to us for less than retail. Once it was installed, I noticed how cheap the sliding pull out racks were. I also noticed that the spray arms / wands were plastic. We have had better quality dishwashers over the years and as I recall, all the spray arms were metal. I must say that it was very quiet and worked fine for about three weeks.

After about the third week, the door started making a very loud and annoying “squeaking” sound every time it was opened and closed. I had a repairman out two different times. He tried lubricating the hinge but because the problem was actually deeper into the unit, squirting it with WD-40 only helped for a few days. (I was told later by an appliance tech that this model was not built with adequate wheel rollers that are used with the tension line which operates the counter balance on the door)

I finally convinced Electrolux (the mother company) to replace it, but nobody followed through for us for weeks. In the mean time, the spray arm located on the top of the unit fell completely off. I was able to snap it back into place because it is made of cheap plastic. It kept falling off again during use. I was so upset that I contacted Electrolux and insisted on talking to the furthest person up the line I could get to so I could honestly tell them that I was so surprised what a lousy product Electrolux would sell. I know it’s got Frigidaire’s name on it, but it is an Electrolux product. I told them that we have had one of their bullet-proof vacuum cleaners for 20 years, so assumed they were a quality company and couldn’t believe they would sell such a horrible dishwasher. From that point on, I can say that their customer service kicked in and they stepped up their efforts and arranged to have it replaced qickly. The Gallery was out of stock so they upgraded me to the top of the Frigidaire line “Professional” series and it was delivered within one week. I had the appliance man carefully open this “top of the line” machine up and upon me seeing the exact cheap racks and plastic wash arms, I had him put the box back together and leave it with me. I sold it cheap, new in the box off Craig’s list and am now again looking for a quality dishwasher just as you are. Do not buy this dishwasher! You will be sorry. I read the other review on this same model and could only shake my head.

Piece of Junk

I purchased this model at the end of March, 2010 and the motor was already replaced by June 15th, 2010 due to a loud squeaking/whistling noise during cycling. My dog would even tilt his head because the whistle was so loud. The repairman told me that the motors on this model has been giving people trouble with noises so he replaced the motor. He told me he as replaced a lot of motors for this model. Here it is now July 14th and last night I ran the dishwasher with a full load and now the motor is making a horrific grinding noise to the point where I have to stop the 90 minute cycle because I cannot stand the noise. I do NOT recommend this model at all. Piece of Crap!

I have had my stove for about 2 years and I just think it is great. Not real sure what the other 2 people are having problems with. I will say it does tend to run high when something starts to boil I have to turn it down to med to keep it from over boiling. Sense I have used gas in the past I am use to the high heat. Everything else is pretty much good. I do wish the burners were a little more close to the same size. It seems I am always using the same burner because of size.
Also I paid $900.00 not $1500.00 so that makes it a plus and I bought it brand new.

Kitchen Aid Electric Range a Bust

Handsome is not what handsome does in the case of Kitchen Aid’s Gorgeous George of a range. The oven is erratic but runs cool, the warming drawer is useful though not accurate. But it is in the no brainer category of range top functions that the product can drive you crazy. Four burners boil water at different rates. That is because some cool down before the boiling point. The dials are not calibrated accurately. You cannot cook rice or oatmeal without watching the pot. Why? because the simmer functions run too hot on one burner and too cool on others. It’s boil over or sit uncooked. Which is a safety hazard; caution mental health at stake. The Whirlpool warranty service from the manufacturer consists of advising the repairman to ask the customer if her pots are flat on the bottom. They will deny you have a problem or you will be told to get a second opinion from a repairmen outside your area who will take days to respond. The problem isn’t with the dealer. It is with manufacturers who buy reliable competitors like Amana, become virtual monopolies and phase out service to dealers.

Burnt or Uncooked, Take Your Choice

How can something that looks so good, be such a piece of crap. After the umpteenth plate of burnt and/or boiled over food I’ve attempted to cook on this monumental failure of a kitchen range, I surfed over to Amazon to see if others were enjoying the same experience. Sure enough, it’s not just me that can’t cook a decent meal on this junkpile. If you’re looking for a good excuse to sue a manufacturer for a housefire and food poisoning at the same time, here you go. Near impossible to keep clean because of the sharp corners designed into the top, and the food burnt into the ceramic, cleanable only with a razor blade if you don’t want to scratch it with abrasives. The only safe way to use this range is to put it in ‘Sabbath’ mode, which apparently means that nothing works. Actually, it’s in this mode all the time.

Purchased Two, Both Read Different Temps

I purchased two of these units and noticed they were reading different temps right out of the box. I placed both in my freezer for 4 hours and after that time they had diverged by 8 full degrees F. Is one wrong? Are both wrong? I really have no way of knowing.

Works Fine

This is a very handy gadget for me because I can monitor the temps in my fridge in different places to see where the colder and hotter spots are. It is just the right size so as not to take up too much space, and the dial is easily readable. Build quality is good, no complaints. As for accuracy, I compared it against a different brand right next to each other and the readings are similar so I will have to assume it is accurate. I’m not using it for critical applications anyway, just making sure the fridge is cold enough for safe food storage. I would buy this again.

Crooked label makes it 3+ degrees inaccurate

I just received this thermometer from Amazon. My wife and I were impressed with the NSF certification and the HACCP guidelines the thermometer was to follow. However, I have no idea how it can pass such guidelines with any confidence, as the unit we received has the label cocked just shy of 10 degrees counter-clockwise, making the degree reading off by about 3-4 degrees of temperature.

The unit is a solid steel unit with no ability to adjust anything. However, if you thought this was to be one of the more precise units, you will be sorely mistaken. Even if I put up with the wildly crooked label, I can’t calibrate it for the actual temperature, so I’m left not knowing if the unit came calibrated and the factory had to twist the label, or if the unit would be calibrated if only the label was straightened.

It’s made in China by a French company. Maybe that says it all.

Not Quite

I have two of these units. bought them both at the same time. In the past years we have had to replace the control boards 5 times (2 on one 3 on the other). The boards are ~250 plus labor to fix. You can buy ‘em here on line but its not really worth the bother. Steam comes out of the unit and gets the control board wet. It can only handle so many of those cycles.

When they work they are quiet but the constant repair is a real hassle!

Decent dishwasher, good value

Have been using the diswaher for about 1 month now, and overall I am pleased with it. On the “pro” side, it runs quietly, holds a good amount of dishes, has an adequate amount of features (sani wash, high temp wash, delay wash are a few), looks decent, and it performs (cleans the dishes) very well.

On the “con” side, in relation to my previous dishwasher it is on the slow side – it can take 1 hour to finish (which is no biggie for me), it isn’t going to blow you away in features, and twice in roughly 10+ washes the detergent cup did not pop open – not sure yet if it is more of a fluke or something more serious. Can’t say much yet about long term reliability, but all in all, it seems to be a good value and does perform well.

Beware of DCS!!!!

I am writing this review to help spare others what we are going through right now. We bought a DCS grill seven years ago and the customer service was amazing. We love the grill and the customer service experiences we had during that purchase led us to purchase the DCS 48in gas cooktop with grill and griddle. I wish we had realized they have been bought by another company! Our NEW cooktop we paid around $3800.00 for came to use with missing parts and a drip try that was installed so poorly it would not open. The tray alignment is off and it bent the frame. We called DCS immediately expecting the same amazing customer service we had gotten several years ago and were stunned at their reaction which was basically “too bad”. They refused to replace the cooktop and were of no help at all. We went as far up the chain as possible with nothing but the same run around. They insisted that we get it serviced – OUR BRAND NEW $3800.00 COOKTOP – serviced! They would not even consider helping us until we had a service company come out and try to fix our new appliance. They said that the service company would have to deem it irreparable before they would “try to resolve it” – not replace it. The servicemen worked on the drip tray and although it now pulls out, it has to be forced. They are ordering the missing parts from DCS and those should be in sometime after Christmas. When you purchase an appliance that costs that much and claims to be a high-end product, you expect the customer service to match their claims. This cooktop should have been replaced immediately and we cannot believe the hoops we are having to go through. Furthermore, we are afraid of the issues we may have to face in the future. What else is wrong with this thing – how did it get damaged – is the quality control so poor that they marked parts as included yet they weren’t? Did they actually inspect this cooktop before it left their warehouse? We are so angry and are trying to work through the process but I am strongly urging you to choose something else!!!

We needed new drip pans for our stove. Went to every store around here and could never find both the large and small at one store or even the same brands at a few stores. These came in a set of 4 (2 small and 2 large) that fit perfectly. They were delivered quickly also.

The right stuff

Couldn’t be happier.

I had tried several different “universal” drip pans from local hardware stores, and had to return them. Those that I tried looked like the originals but actually were about 3/16″ smaller in overall diameter, and the electric elements would not seat all the way in and rocked from side to side.

I ordered this set based on the comments of other users posted here. They are a perfect fit for my GE stove. BTW, they also listed as “universal” but upon receipt the are further identified on the labeling as TYPE B. What ever the difference these were perfect replacements for WB31T10010 6″ and WB31T10011 8″ as listed by GE as the replacement part numbers for my 30″ GE Spectra standalone range/oven….Model JBP24.

Don’t last, warranty practically useless

I bought mine at the local big-box home improvement store. It is used in my heated basement, which I want extra-dry as my firearms and other sensitive items are stored there.

After six months it started making a lot of noise. I checked it and found that the cooling coils were completely iced up, totally blocking the air flow. I let it defrost completely and tried again, with the same icing resulting after a few hours. I checked the manual. which gave “room temperature is too low” as the cause. Doubtful, I thought, but it is winter and only about 60 degrees in here. So I waited to spring and tried again. Now there is no cooling effect at all, and no water output. Obviously the icing was from the cooling fluid leaking, and finally it all leaked out resulting in the total lack of operation.

This is my second Frigidaire dehumidifier. The first had a fan motor failure after six months.

Obviously Frigidaire is no longer synonymous with quality.

By the way, it is not possible to contact Frigidaire customer service by their 800 number. The option for “speak to a representative” results in the computer giving a long-distance number to call. On previous occasions, I have had no luck with trying to contact them via their web site, either. However I tried again, this time requesting return contact by telephone.

This time they actually responded, but by email despite my request for contact by phone. The response was “I would like to offer you a 60% rebate towards a new unit.” My response to that was, quoting the manual, “The unit has a FIVE YEAR WARRANTY period during which ‘Frigidaire will repair or replace any part in the Sealed Refrigeration System….,’ so why should I have to pay 40 percent?”

Their reply: “We apologize we will not be able to arrange service for your dehumidifier. Regrettably, escalating service costs have rendered repairing dehumidifiers a thing of the past as these units are no longer serviced.

Please let us know if you wish to accept the rebate offer so we may assist with issuing a rebate letter outlining details of the rebate as soon as possible. Please also note that not only will you receive the 60% rebate but as an added bonus when you receive the new dehumidifier the warranty will start over again from day one.”

I wrote them again, requesting that they honor their written warranty. They replied “Thank you for contacting Frigidaire. We apologize that we are not able to assist.”

In other words, they are refusing to honor the written warranty in the owner’s manual. I have filed a complaint with the FTC, but expect little assistance since I am just a single citizen.

It is not only Frigidaire’s product quality that is suffering….

Update, 06/24/2011: At N. Ha’s suggestion (see comments on this review), I complained to the BBB in Georgia, where the Frigidaire humidifier service center is located per the manual. Today I received a phone call from Electrolux about my complaint. The woman said they wanted to “buy my unit back” for the full amount I had paid for it. She refused to call this a refund. However, she said I do not have to ship this unit they are buying to them, only the label with the model and serial number plus my original receipt. I guess calling it a refund might set a precedent. I, of course, accepted the offer and am awaiting the paperwork.

So, it looks like the only way to get satisfaction for the written warranty they have unilaterally decided to cancel for all current and future customers is to complain to the BBB. I hope many will do so.

This dehumidifier does the trick

Two things will be obvious: first, I’m clearly no videographer; second, this is a pretty good product.

In the space of about 3-1/2 min. this video will

1. walk you through a typical use case in a basement,
2. show you how to use the dehumidifier, and
3. offer a simple (and in many cases, cost-free) way of connecting the dehumidifier to a floor drain.

Works like a sponge–but needs a modification for hose drainage

This unit sucks water from the air by the gallons. I set it up in my finished basement and right out of the box it worked great. So well, in fact, I needed to empty the large capacity tank too often. So I opened up the back hose valve, connected a short garden hose and pointed it to the floor drain. The unit kept filling up the tank and did not drain out the hose . It appears that the hose drain in the back just works on gravity–there’s no pump. So if the floor is not level and/or if the hose is a little narrower than the male connector on the back of the unit (as most are) the water will not drain through the hose the valve. The fault is poor product design. To remedy, I bought a right-angle PVC adapter, barb adapter and clear tubing (to visually see whether it was working) from Flex PVC.com. Parts: “508-007 FGH by .75 FPT (female NPT) 90degree”, “PPN46 3/4 mpt x 1/2 barb adapter”, and “1/2 x 5/8 Clear Tubing BTF”. The right angle adapter is large and maintains the 3/4″ garden hose opening from end to end. Once assembled and attached I experimented and found the correct position for the dehumidifier which is on a slightly uneven floor. Now the water drains through the hose (which I can watch through the clear hose) and it works as it should. Frigidaire should provide this setup to all users that need to use the hose valve in the back until they fix the design issue. I keep the unit running continuously and it gives off more heat than I would like, heating up the basement which is usually cool in the summer. But it’s somewhat unavoidable with this technology so I will take heat over humidity. I’ve added an image of my setup to the product images for visual reference.
